Summer Tyres:
Generally used throughout the entire year, but due to their construction they perform better above 7°C. Summer tyres can perform well in both wet and dry conditions so it is worth paying attention to the Wet Grip EC rating.
All Season / All Weather Tyres:
For those people who don't want the hassle of changing their tyres twice a year, all season tyres seem like a logical compromise. Designed to work year round, in theory the all season tyre can offer 90% of the wet and dry performance of a summer tyre, combined with 90% of the performance of a winter tyre on the snow.
Winter / Cold Weather Tyres:
Winter Tyres are specifically designed to operate in temperatures lower than 7°C, whereas the rubber compound in normal 'every-day' tyres hardens - effecting road holding and stopping distances.
Winter Tyres are designed to 'flex' in such temperatures which drastically improves the driving experience and road safety.
Below 7°C you would stop upto 11m sooner with Winter Tyres fitted (on an icy road from just 20mph).
